ACMS – Guided Tour of Thursley Village

23rd April 2020, 11:00 - 13:00

Thursley village : the early home of Edwin Lutyens

Thursday 23 April 2020

Start Time: 11.00am

Meet at: St. Michaels Church Thursley

Our colleagues from the Arts & Crafts Movement in Surrey are inviting Surrey Hills Society members to join them for the above tour which takes us to the village of Thursley, just west of the A3 between Milford and Hindhead.

We will hear how Edwin Lutyens parents rented The Cottage in Thursley between approximately 1876 and 1915 and the young Lutyens moved there with the family when he was six years old. Ten years later he was to start his studies at The South Kensington School of Art but much of his formative years were spent here with his parents and a multitude of siblings.

Thursley has a number of Lutyens early commissions, and gives us the rare chance to view some of his early works. The church of St Michaels also has a number of Lutyens family memorials. We shall meet at 11.00am and have Sukey Langdale of the local history society to guide us around the village.

We shall see “Street House” known as “The Cottage” when Charles Lutyens, Edwin’s father, leased it in 1876; the house staying in family occupation after Charles death in 1915 when his sister Aileen continued to live there.

Also to be viewed on the walk is “The Corner”. Lutyens was commissioned in 1888 at the age of 19 to convert a row of cottages to form this single residence and seven years later designed a further extension.

“Prospect cottage” is one of Thursley’s most delightful buildings. Formerly the Village Institute, it was designed by Lutyens and formally opened and given to the Parish Council in 1901. The Institute was disbanded in 1959 and the building converted to residential use.

After the tour you may like to join ACMS members for lunch or a drink ( at your own cost) at the local village pub, The Three Horseshoes.  In view of current circumstances, attendees will be contacted nearer the time to agree options but in the meantime their menu can be viewed here:

The cost for SHS members will be £12.00 and non members £15.00.
