Walk and visit to Dunsborough Park, Ripley

18th April 2020, 10:30 - 14:00

Newark Priory and Tulips at Dunsborough Park
18th April 2020
10.30 am – 2 pm

Join our Chairman, Gordon Jackson for a short circular walk of about three and a half miles (5.6 kms) from Ripley Green, along part of the shore of Papercourt Lake and then along the canal path of the River Wey with views of the ruins of Newark Priory, built by the Augustinian Order in the late 12th Century. Our route will also take us past Newark Lock.

The walk is timed to take about an hour and a half and we have arranged for early access for our group at 12:00 pm to the gardens of Dunsborough Park, which are open to the public from 1:00 pm.

The booking fee includes access to the gardens.  The tulip displays at this time of year are truly stunning.

Dunsborough Park dates back to the dissolution of the Monasteries when the lands of Newark Abbey were given to a local nobleman. The farmer taking over the land built a farmhouse around a single central brick chimney which has now grown to become Dunsborough House. (NB The house is in private occupation and not open to the public). The gardens were laid out in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Re-opened to the public in 1997 after being restored by garden statuary dealer, Dolf Sweerts de Landas Wyborgh and his wife, Caroline, this magnificent 100-acre estate comprises a series of historical gardens brought to life through vistas and garden architecture.

This walk is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. Dogs on a lead are welcome but are not allowed into the Park.

The walk is flat although there are a couple of stiles. The land is low lying and can be muddy so please wear appropriate footwear and clothing.

No refreshments are included but there are refreshment facilities in Dunsborough Park that can be bought separately.

The cost will be £9.00 for members and £12.50 for non-members.
