Explore Ewood, Parkgate and Hammonds Copse
Sunday 5th April 2020
Meeting at Surrey Oaks Pub, Newdigate, Surrey, RH5 5DZ
10.00am for 10:30am prompt start
Approx finish at 12.45 pm
Come and join the Chairman of Surrey Hills Society, Gordon Jackson, on this easy but medium length walk that takes in a variety of Surrey woodland and open fields together with the historic hamlet of Ewood and Hammond’s Copse Nature Reserve.
Ewood (Yew Wood) was described during the medieval period as a “park” which was an enclosure of the forest for the purpose of deer hunting – the patent rolls of 1312 refer to it. Enjoy the peace and tranquillity of this charming historic hamlet.
A highlight of this walk will be a visit to Hammonds Copse nature reserve, which is an ancient area of broadleaf woodland. It is maintained by the Woodland Trust which is the UK’s largest woodland conservation charity, with 500,000 members and supporters and more than 1,000 woods that are free to visit at any time. The Woodland Trust creates havens for wildlife by planting millions of trees every year, campaigns for new laws to protect ancient woodland and restores damaged ancient woods so they can breathe again.
The walk will commence and finish at the Surrey Oaks public house, which is a great supporter of micro-breweries from both near and far and has won many awards. The building itself dates in part from the 16th century, but only became a pub in 1850 having previously been a wheelwright’s cottage. At your option you may join us for lunch afterwards. Please indicate on the booking form if you wish to do this so that we can reserve sufficient places. TheIr menu can be seen here:http://www.thesurreyoaks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/The-Surrey-Oaks-Menu.pdf
Time of arrival is from 10:00 am to leave promptly at 10:30 am. The walk will take about two and a quarter hours depending on the size and speed of the group. The walk will be guided at all times.
Grid ref: TQ205437 Postcode for Sat Nav: RH5 5DZ
Parking: Free in pub car park. Length of walk: 4½ miles (7.1 kms)
The event is open to all reasonably fit walkers but is not suitable for buggies or wheelchairs. The walk is relatively easy and very flat with a number of stiles but it is longer than some of our walks. Some of the stiles have wire netting at the bottom so the walk is not suitable for dogs unless they can be lifted over. Older children, who can walk the distance, are welcome but this is not designed as a children’s event.
Stout foot wear is recommended and weather appropriate clothing is suggested. Some parts of the route can be a bit muddy. WE DO NOT BELIEVE IT WILL BE NECESSARY BUT IF THE GROUND CONTINUES TO BE VERY WET WE MAY DECIDE TO CHANGE THE DEPARTURE POINT AND ROUTE OF THIS WALK IN WHICH CASE ALL PARTICIPANTS WILL BE NOTIFIED BY EMAIL AT LEAST 72 HOURS IN ADVANCE.
