Follow the North Downs Way from Guildford to Dorking – a sponsored walk

28th September 2019, 09:30 - 16:00

Join Street Angel Leaders and the Vice President of Surrey Hills Society Chris Howard (who is also the Chairman of Guildford’s Walkfest) on this 14 mile (22 km) linear walk along the North Downs Way from Guildford to Dorking via St Martha’s Chapel as part of the Guildford Walkfest celebrations. The Surrey Hills Society Events Team will be leading this sponsored walk, which has been organised to raise funds for the important work done by Guildford’s Street Angels.

A team of ‘Angels’ will be treading the stunning Surrey countryside by following this ancient route of pilgrims along the North Downs Way, as a fund-raiser for the charity. Since St Martha-on-the-Hill church was possibly a stopping-off point for pilgrims during the Middle Ages on their way to Canterbury Cathedral, this route has particular significance to the work of the ‘Angels’.

Guildford Street Angels are better known for patrolling their cobbled High Street, bringing a calming presence to the night-time economy, which they have been doing for over a decade, without fail, every Friday and Saturday night between 10.30pm and 4am.  The award winning Street Angels have almost 100 volunteers, Each year it assists some 5,000 people, providing a hospitable and practical presence in the town centre, reducing the risk of aggression and crime. They seek to reassure, offer practical help and enable people to get home safely. They give flip flops for broken heels, foil blankets to protect against hypothermia, offer a listening ear, re-charge mobile phones and signpost people to other services.

You are invited to sign up and get sponsorship, or “Be an Angel” by sponsoring our team of walkers, to encourage the host of ‘Angels’ on their way – it costs over £80,000 a year to run the Angel projects.  Please donate to help keep them protecting the vulnerable on our streets, no donation is too small!  Go to http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fund/19Walkfestangelwalk for details.

Guildford Walkfest is now in its 12th year and offers a full month of walks to celebrate the beautiful borough in which many of us live.  The festival is run by volunteers from all the different walking groups represented in the borough, including the Surrey Hills Society.

This walk is recommended for moderately fit walkers. The walk has several steep hills but no stiles. Bring plenty of water, money for coffee break (if required) and return travel, plus a packed lunch as there are no facilities on this part of the route. Appropriate footwear and weatherproof clothing essential. Well behaved dogs on leads are welcome on the walk. Children under 18 years must be supervised and used to doing long distance all day walks.

Meet us at Guildford Railway Station from 9.15am for a 9.30am prompt start and an approx. finish around 4.00pm, depending on your pace. This 14 mile, linear walk will take us to Dorking from where we will return by bus, car share or train. There are several long stay car parks in Guilford.  See www.guildford.gov.uk/carparks  for details.

The event is free, but booking is essential. Book your place at the bottom of this page and register on the understanding that you are fundraising for Street Angels via their sponsorship page http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fund/19Walkfestangelwalk

The organisers reserve the right to decline the participation of any person who arrives on the day but is clearly not fit enough or is inappropriately attired for such a walk.
