Free Guided walk from Guildford to National Garden Scheme Garden in Wonersh

12th September 2019, 13:30 - 17:00

Meet at entrance to Yvonne Arnaud Theatre – Free event

Join the Vice Presidents of the Surrey Hills Society, Chris Howard and Ken Bare, on this easy flat walk from Guildford, along the River Wey to Shalford and then on to Wonersh to visit this popular National Garden Scheme garden.

Alternatively, for a shorter walk, join us outside The Snooty Fox café, Shalford at 3.00pm for a short ¼ mile walk to the garden.

Don’t miss an exciting opportunity to see this beautiful one acre cottage garden on the outskirts of Wonersh, which has been featured in ‘Period Homes’ and ‘Surrey Life’ magazine. There will be free admission for all Walkfest and other participants on this walk.  Normally the garden is only open by appointment for groups.

The National Garden Scheme is a charity that raises funds by privately owned houses opening their gardens in England and Wales to raise funds for worthwhile causes. It was founded in 1927 in England with the aim of “opening gardens of quality, character and interest to the public for charity”. The scheme has raised over £50 million since it began, and over half a million garden visits occur each year. When the scheme began 609 private gardens were opened and £8,191 was raised. See www.ngs.org.uk for more details or, to book an appointment for your own group, phone 01483 535108.

Length of Walk: Guildford to Wonersh is a 1.5 mile walk and then 1.5 miles for the return journey. Alternatively, there is a regular bus service (53 or 32) from Shalford back to Guildford.  There is also a train station at Shalford. Shalford to garden in Wonersh is ¼ mile.

The longer walk is fairly flat and leisurely and open to reasonably fit walkers. Less fit walkers can join at Shalford for the short flat walk to Wonersh.

Stout foot wear is recommended and weather appropriate clothing and sunscreen lotion if required.
