Explore Worplesdon – free, guided walk

6th August 2017, 10:30 - 13:00

Join the Chairman of Surrey Hills Society, Chris Howard to explore this less well known area just outside Guildford, which has some surprising hidden treasures, including two bronze-age barrows.

Worplesdon is derived from the old English word “werpels”, meaning a bridleway and “dun” meaning a hill. The area has been inhabited for 3-4000 years. Two bronze-age barrows were excavated by General Pitt-Rivers in 1877, which can now be admired in the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford.

Former Prime Minister, Lloyd George once owned a property on Whitmoor Common, where he reputedly spent many happy times with his mistress, Frances Stevenson. The Common is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and is managed by The Whitmoor Common Association and Surrey Wildlife Trust.

We will finish this 4 mile walk at Jolly Farmer Pub.  Dogs are welcome on the walk.

Meet us at Worplesdon Memorial Hall’s free car park, Perry Hill, Worplesdon, GU3 3RF, Grid ref: SU971540 at 10.30am for 11.00am prompt start and a 1.00pm finish.

If you wish to use public transport. Bus 28 from Woking Station will take you to our meeting point.

The event is free and open to all walkers, but booking your place is essential. For bookings and further enquiries, contact info@surreyhillssociety.org or text Chris Howard on 07879841000.
