Albury Open Day and Guided Walk (for the Festival of Archaeology)

As part of the Albury Park test pitting project and open day on Sunday 28 July (part of this year’s Festival of Archaeology), a 2-hour guided walk between Shere and Albury Park will take place at 14:00, starting at Albury’s Saxon church.

The walk, which will be led by Surrey Hills Society, will take in the deserted village of Albury, currently being investigated by Surrey Archaeological Society, and the local milling history of the Tillingbourne. The walk will begin near the Saxon church at the park (where parking is available) and start with a steep climb out of the park, undulating around its outside and the edge of Shere, before circling back through the fields and ending again back at the church. It is approximately 5km and has a moderate level of difficulty, with both woodland and open fields being incorporated.

An open day at Albury Park will be taking place at the same time, and there will be opportunities beforehand to view the archaeology and displays of the finds, as well as an opportunity to visit the landscaped gardens of the estate from 13:00 to 14:00. A talk in the church by the local archaeologist in charge, Dr Anne Sassin, will be at 16:30. More information on the open day can be found on the test pitting event page.

Spaces are limited (20 maximum), and booking is essential for the walk. Please note that due to the nature of the walk, we ask that participants are aged 10+.
