Meet at Percy Arms Chilworth GU4 8NP
Join the Vice President of the Surrey Hills, Chris Howard, on an exploration of this fascinating ruin- once the site of a major gunpowder factory dating from Tudor times. Learn more about the history of the site and how it is managed today. We will also walk up St Martha’s Hill to visit the historic church of St Martha’s with its spectacular views down to the South Downs.
We will finish the walk with an optional drink in the Percy Arms pub.
The walk around the gunpowder mills is fairly flat, but can be muddy and slippery if wet. The climb up to St Martha’s is very steep and should only be attempted by fit walkers. It would be possible to just do the Gunpowder Mills part of the tour. The event is not suitable for wheelchairs.
Stout foot wear is recommended and weather appropriate clothing plus sunscreen lotion if required.
