Discover Wanborough Great Barn

17th August 2019, 14:30 - 16:30

The Great Barn at Wanborough lies just to the north of the Hog’s Back.  It is one of the largest and most important medieval barns in south east England.  It was built in 1388 by the Cistercian monks of Waverley Abbey, five miles away, as part of a ‘grange’ – a farm which supplied the abbey itself.  Waverley Abbey was closed down by King Henry VIII in 1536, but the barn has remained essentially as it was in the Middle Ages.

In addition to our guided tour of the Barn, we will visit the adjacent Granary where we will watch a short film showing the connection between Wanborough Great Barn and the monks of Waverley Abbey.  We will learn about how the Barn was built and the uses to which it has been put.  We will go back to the 14th Century to understand the major events in the country as the monks were building the Great Barn.

We will also take a short walk through the hamlet to the 13th century church and a view of the Manor House. We will then return to the Great Barn for tea, fresh filter coffee and biscuits with an opportunity to browse around the permanent exhibition, ‘10,000 Years of History’, which covers aspects of local history, including the pre-historic origins of Wanborough, the finds from the nearby Roman Temples, the robbers and the changes to the law that resulted, the Domesday Book, and the secrets of the SOE base in Wanborough Manor during the Second World War plus much more.

The cost for members is £8.00 and £10.00 for non-members including refreshments. The barn has easy access for people with mobility issues and children are welcome to attend as the barn can be accessed with pushchairs. Obedient dogs can join us as well.

Booking is essential. If you would like to join us, please book your place online at the bottom of this page. Alternatively please complete and return the downloadable slip here below before Saturday 10th August 2019. Full event details will be sent to you closer to the event date.
