Explore Bourne Wood and Farnham Heath

7th November 2021, 10:30 - 13:00

Explore Bourne Wood and Farnham Heath
Start time: 10.30am for prompt 11am start
Finish time: 1pm

Join our Chairman Gordon Jackson and Surrey Hills Society member Colin Crofts, for a fairly gentle 2 hour walk following some of the different footpaths through this pine woodland and heath taking in the lovely views of the surrounding area.

Bourne Wood (also known as Bourne Woods) is an area of predominantly coniferous woodland just south of Farnham. Much of the wood was formerly heathland at the western end of the Greensand Ridge that was developed privately during the 20th century as commercial conifer plantations. Part of Bourne Wood has been purchased by the RSPB and forms part of the larger Farnham Heath Nature Reserve.  It is home to nightjars, woodlarks, Dartford warblers, tree pipits and many other heathland species.

Bourne Woods is a well know location used for many films including Gladiator, Robin Hood, War Horse, Harry Potter and, more recently, The Witcher a drama production for Netflix.

During the summer months Farnham Heath also forms the backdrop for the Heathlands Art Trail organised by Surrey Hills Arts.  Some of the exhibits have been retained over the years by the RSPB as permanent features.

Our walk will start at the RSPB Farnham Heath car park which is next to the Rural Life Centre in Tilford.  The Old Kiln Cafe within the Rural Life Centre will be open for refreshments after our walk.

The walk is relatively easy and suitable for moderately fit walkers.
