Join us for a 9.5km (6 mile) circular walk in the Surrey Hills, starting from Newlands Corner and visiting a number of popular attractions including St Martha’s Hill, Silent Pool and a stretch of the North Downs Way and offering superb views.

Our walk will commence from the far end of the public car park at Newlands Corner.

Newlands Corner is a 103-hectare (250-acre) nature reserve owned by the Albury Estate. It has some of the best views in the Surrey Hills.

We will walk along the North Downs Way to the church of St Martha on the Hill, which is only accessible by foot. Although the current church was substantially reconstructed in the 1850’s , the previous church dated back to the 12th Century and the site has evidence of artefacts believed to date back to 3500 BC (the Bronze Age).

We will then cross Albury Downs to Silent Pool, a spring fed lake at the foot of the North Downs.

Silent Pool is linked to an alleged folklore tale that says King John on his horse abducted a woodcutter’s daughter who was forced into the deep water and drowned. According to the legend, the maiden can be seen at midnight.

Today the Silent Pool Gin Distillery and Albury Vineyard are located close by. We will then undertake a steep climb up to the North Downs Way and then return to Newlands Corner.

This walk is rated as

Please note:

1. The walk has several climbs and descents throughout, including a steep climb up to the top of the North Downs.
2. Several of the paths can be muddy and some of the chalk slopes can be very slippery when wet so good footwear is essential.
3. You will need to negotiate some steps, one kissing gate and two stiles (both of which have open fence surrounds for dogs to pass through).
4. The route crosses two busy roads so take particular care at these points.

This event is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs or those with mobility issues.  Children over 10 are welcome if they can manage the distance.

Dogs on leads are welcome.

You may wish to take advantage of the Newlands Café which provides good takeaway food and the Plucky Pheasant which is opposite the car park.
