President’s Day – A day in Ripley

Saturday 8th July 2023

Start time: 9:30am – 4pm

Join our President, Chris Howard for our annual President’s Day. This year we are throwing the spotlight on historic Ripley and in particular its award-winning Farmers Market and local producers.

We will enjoy tea/coffee in the morning at The Talbot, in the centre of the village. This historic coaching inn stands as one of the most storied and historic coaching inns in England, boasting many period features from its 500 year history.

Its biggest claim to fame is that it is said that this is a place where Admiral Lord Nelson’s relationship with Lady Hamilton is said to have “blossomed” at this convenient stop-off between London and Portsmouth.

Ripley is known for its artistic, cultural and active local community and is one of Surrey’s most desirable villages. The village is mentioned in H. G. Wells’ novels The War of the Worlds and The Wheels of Chance. The Arthur Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes short story “The Naval Treaty” includes a setting in Ripley.

It is the birthplace of rock/blues guitarist Eric Clapton. Musician, Paul Weller is a long-term resident of Ripley and runs the local recording studios Black Barn Studios. The village also hosts the annual and popular “Ripley Rocks”, which happens to be held on the same day that we are there, so if you are really keen you can stay on to rock the night away!

After refreshments, we will walk across to what is claimed to be the largest village green in England, where the Farmers Market will be held.

Not only will we get the opportunity to shop at this special market, but we will also get the VIP treatment with our own gazebo.

We will be treated to ‘behind the scenes’ presentations from 6 of the most interesting local producers, along with some tastings. We will also meet the volunteer team that run the market and hear how the market came about and how it works to benefit the local community.

We will then return to The Talbot for a two-course lunch. (Drinks to be ordered separately at the bar).
