After the lecture at 3pm and included in the price of your ticket, Tea, Coffee, and a delicious selection of homemade cakes including Victoria sponge, Lemon drizzle cake, Peanut butter blondies and many more (including gluten free options) will be served in the Institutes Assembly room, now dining room with its’ famous Bechstein piano.

The Guildford Institute building has a Grade 2 listing and has seen many changes since 1881 when it started life as “The Royal Arms Coffee Tavern and Temperance Hotel”. Since then, it has served amongst other things as an Institute for Mechanics, for Natural History, Literature and has seen many other changes within its doors. In 1896 a Chess Club was founded which continues to this day and is renowned as one of the strongest clubs in the UK with beginners to a grand master.

1982 saw the opening of Guildford’s ‘only vegetarian restaurant, run by a group of friends and called “The Friday Beano”. Today that tradition continues with “The V Café” , winner of Surrey Life Food and Drink Award, so (at your own expense), why not treat yourself to a tasty vegetarian or vegan lunch before the lecture.
