Following on from Simon Elson’s talk about Reigate Heath, he has kindly agreed to give us a guided tour pointing out some of the features described.
This will be a very easy walk mainly on flat paths with lots of stops to see the points of interest along the way. The heath is mainly on sand so it is rarely wet underfoot. As you walk, there are magnificent views of the North Downs to be enjoyed.
In case you are not aware of the contents of the talk, the description is repeated below.
Simon has worked extensively with the Reigate Heath Conservation Volunteers and is an expert on the area. He will talk about why Reigate Heath is important, its wildlife, its past and future. It is one of our most heavily protected sites, yet still has issues that are pertinent throughout the Surrey Hills. We have a new Council Management Plan for the site, the SSSI designation has been extended, and the Surrey Hills AONB boundary review looks like it will now include the Reigate Heath area. Come along and find out more!
This is an outdoor event and so you are advised to come in clothing suitable for the prevailing weather conditions.
Cost to Members: £5
Cost to Non-members: £7
A donation to the Reigate Heath Conservation Volunteers is included in the cost.
This event is suitable for children and/or pushchairs but some paths might be tricky.
Those with mobility issues are welcome on the wander but the walk is not suitable for wheelchairs.
Obedient dogs on leads are welcome.
There are two good pubs nearby for those who might like refreshment before or after the walk – The Black Horse and The Skimmington Castle.
Deadline for booking 7 October 2023.
