Discover Ewood, Newdigate

Date: 5 September 2021

Time: 10:30 am start to finish around 12.30 pm

Ewood is a delightful hamlet that forms part of Newdigate. Ewood is now part of Newdigate. A medieval hunting park was probably created here soon after 1089, when William de Warenne was created Earl of Surrey and granted the manors of Dorking, Reigate etc., including Ewood.

This walk will be led by our member, Wendy Richards, who has invited us to start at her home in Ewood. After tea and coffee we will walk to Mill Cottage, where we will see the attractive garden and the owner will give us a ten minute talk about the bloomery ironworks that may have been on this site in the 1400s and early 1500s. In about 1500, a new ironworking technology arrived from the Continent: the blast furnace and one was installed at Mill Cottage. Instead of heating the iron ore in batches to produce soft masses of iron in the hearth, using hand-worked bellows, the furnace used water-powered bellows to generate enough heat for the iron to become molten. It could then be run out into moulds, while more ore and charcoal was fed in at the top. A blast furnace could run continuously for long periods.

Wendy will then lead us on an hours walk around the surrounding wood and fields, so appropriate footware is essential.  Please bring sunscreen lotion if required.

Dogs are welcome on leads.

Length of Walk:  2 miles
