2nd March 2025, 10:00 - 13:00
Join Walk Leaders Andy and Sue Rodger for an exploration of this ancient heathland area, which includes a visit to the Roman Temple ruin at Farley Heath common.
Enjoy a leisurely 6km walk to explore this rare heathland habitat, which is the site of the largest Romano-British settlement in Surrey. The walk includes a visit to the remains of a 1st century Romano-Celtic Temple, sections of woodland including an ancient holly wood, as well as heather covered heathland.
Blackheath is famous for its many Arts & Crafts buildings – most of which were designed by Charles Harrison Townsend. We will pass by The Hallams, built by Richard Norman Shaw, originally for Charles Durant Hodgson, a Lancashire brewer, who moved his business to Kingston. More recently it was the headquarters of Batemans the Opticians, before being converted back into a house. You will also enjoy some stunning views over to the North Downs.
This area is very popular with walkers, so we are starting the walk earlier then normal to make sure there are spaces in the car park. Your can also park along the roadside.
This walk is classed as moderate as it is 6k and does include some steep climbs and uneven surfaces so you will need to be relatively fit to attempt this walk.
This walk is not suitable for those with mobility issues.
Please wear strong footwear and clothing suitable for the prevailing weather conditions.
