Hidden Surprises in Chiddingfold – FULLY BOOKED

13th September 2017, 10:30 - 15:30

Join the Chairman, Chris Howard and local historian and plant enthusiast, Jack Salway for a guided day exploring Chiddingfold. The name of Chiddingfold “Chadynge’s fold”, “Chiddingefoulde”, is derived from the Saxon, probably meaning the fold (enclosure for animals) “in the hollow”. The village became famous for its glass-making – during the reign of Elizabeth I, there were no fewer than eleven glass works on the green. Chiddingfold glass was used in some of the finest buildings in the land, including St Stephen’s Chapel, Westminster, and St George’s Chapel, Windsor.

Enjoy meeting local historians who will share some of the village’s history with us, including perhaps its most famous resident, Sir William H Bragg OM KBE PRS (2 July 1862 – 12 March 1942) – early 20th century scientist and mathematician.  He discovered the “Bragg Peak” which is used to treat cancers by radiotherapy. With his son, William Lawrence Bragg they uniquely shared the 1915 Nobel Prize in Physics: “for their services in the analysis of crystal structure by means of X-rays”. The mineral Braggite is named after him and his son. During WW1 he invented the hydrophone (ASDIC) to detect enemy submarines and for this work was knighted in 1920.

Meeting for coffee in the morning, we will look at the local museum where some of Bragg’s artefacts are kept.  We will also visit the parish church of St Mary’s, before returning for lunch in the historic village pub- The Crown.

In the afternoon we will be visiting a fascinating private garden in Chiddingfold, owned by Dr & Mrs Salway.  This surprising subtropical garden (complete with bananas trees!) has appeared on BBC’s “Gardener’s World”. Following the tour of the garden, join us on the lawn for afternoon tea.

The garden is quite steep, with uneven stairs and steep banks, so anyone with weak knees or ankles will not be able to access the garden.  Practical foot ware is recommended. Also, dress appropriately for the weather, as we will be out doors for several parts of the day. The event is also not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs, or dogs.

The price for this guided event is £22 for members and £24 for non-members. This includes tea or coffee on arrival, the tours and talks, and access to the private garden, lunch (buy your own choice of drinks at the bar), afternoon tea and a donation to the Church and Museum.

Booking is essential. If you would like to join us, please book online or complete and return the attached booking form to arrive at Warren Farm Barns before Friday 8th September. Please book online. If you prefer, send a stamped addressed envelope so you may be sent full details and directions for the visit by post.
