Prayers, Plots and Poison – Guildford town walk and tea at The County Club

Wednesday 9 August 2023

2.15pm – 4.30pm

This special walk led by Guildford Town Guides will explore the life of George Abbot, a Guildford boy who rose to national prominence at the Court of King James 1, becoming Archbishop of Canterbury.

He is most remembered in Guildford for Abbot’s Hospital, the magnificent almshouse which he founded – still fulfilling its original purpose 400 years later.

Less well known is the significant role that he played during a turbulent period in English history.

Join us to hear about the highlights and disappointments of his life and times, whilst exploring some of the buildings associated with him. There will also be a few surprises along the way.

Afterwards we will have tea and cakes at the County Club, which is a private members club in the centre of Guildford.

The Club was originally three houses, built in the early 17th century on the site of a 12th -century Inn. It has fabulous views down Guildford High Street and is a quiet oasis in the middle of the town.

The award-winning Guildford Town Guides are knowledgeable volunteers who are passionate about the heritage of Guildford and exploring our past with visitors.

Each year they raise money for a selected charity and part of the booking fee will be donated to their charitable fund.
