We will visit these two local charities which both assist people with learning disabilities.
The Riding for the Disabled Association has been enriching lives through horses for over 55 years and The Grange provides support for people to lead to independent and fulfilling lives. The charity was formed in 1927 for nurses who were injured in the First World War.
Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) benefit the lives of over 20,000 disabled people, both children and adults. They provide fun activities, therapy, fitness, skills development at over 400 centres across the UK. We will be visiting the Bookham centre and will enjoy coffee whilst we have a talk on the history of the RDA and their continuing work with local people. There are spectacular views across to London – weather permitting. We will have an opportunity to meet some of the horses on a walk around the stables. Their annual running costs are just under £30,000.00.
There is then a short drive to The Grange. Their philosophy is to support people with disabilities to lead independent and fulfilling lives.
We will enjoy some delicious homemade scones with tea/coffee prior to having a talk on the history of the charity and a walk around their garden which the students tend to.
The charity was started in 1927 by Julia Sweet as a school of Stitchery and Lace for nurses who were injured in the First World War. They earned a reputation for exquisite workmanship and they were given a royal commissions from Queen Mary.
We will be able to see examples of their work after our talk on this fascinating building and charity. During the Second World War the army took over some of the buildings and the girls were employed mending parachutes and repairing military equipment.
Cost to Members: £15.00
Cost to Non-members: £20.00
Both these organisations are charities and are mainly run by volunteers and would not be able to continue without donations. The price of the event includes a donation to both charities.
Tea, coffee and freshly baked scones will be available at The Grange. When booking your ticket, please select which flavour of scone you would like – plain or fruit or strawberry and white chocolate. If you do have any dietary requirements please note these in the comments box when booking.
