A Day out in Dorking – Fully booked

23rd February 2017, 10:00 - 15:00

st-martins-church dorkin-cockerel

Dorking is a town with a long history sitting as it does surrounded by hills at the crossing of two important valleys running north/south and east/west.  The earliest settlement was probably Roman – it is on the old Stane Street, but its name is Saxon probably derived from Dorchingas.  So the town itself has a long history with lots of interesting happenings over the centuries.  Come and learn more!

The idea of having a museum was first proposed in 1939, and a collection of materials was begun after the war, but it was not housed as an exhibition until 1976.  A bequest in 2003 allowed a plan to rehouse the exhibits to be started, and in 2008 the museum was closed for a complete refurbishment.  The exhibitions are now housed in a sensitively restored and remodelled old Dorking Foundry, and the Museum is very active with its team of volunteers organising various special displays and activities.

We are lucky that they have agreed to guide our members on a walk round the town which is bristling with points of historic interest.  This is an urban walk taking roughly an hour and a half but will be on firm footing, although there may be some inclines to be negotiated.  Please dress appropriately for the outdoor part of the visit, depending on the prevailing weather conditions on the day.

We will meet for coffee at 10 am before beginning the tours at 10.30 – details of the assembly point will be sent with your confirmation of booking.  Lunch will be organised for 12.30 and orders can be taken during the coffee period so that the food can be prepared for our return.

One group will go to the Museum in the morning, while the other group goes on the guided walk.  After lunch, we will swop over so that everyone has a chance to do both.

The cost will be £10 for members, and £12 for non-members which includes coffee plus entrance and guided walk fees to the museum. The cost of lunch is NOT included. This visit is not aimed at children, and obviously dogs are not allowed.

If you would like to join us would you please complete and return the slip below (click on blue letters) before Friday, 18th February 2017.  Please include your e-mail address or a stamped addressed envelope so you may be sent full details, directions and locations for the visit.
