5th March 2026, 10:00 - 12:30

We are once again lucky to have Newdigate Local History Society with John Callcut and Jane Lilley to guide us round the village with their usual enthusiasm and extensive knowledge. This is a chance to discover how such a village developed over the years.
Newdigate originally consisted of just a church, a straggle of houses on Church Lane and Village Street, plus a few on Kingsland. Basically a tiny village with about a dozen houses as late as 1800, straggling along the pre-existing roads – no manor house nor village green.
The walk will take in the evolution of the church and the sites of the early houses, with whatever is on them now. We will include the 350 year old school moving to its present site, the village hall, Winfield Grove, etc.
If you are interested in hearing more about the church than there is time for on the general tour, our guides would be more than happy to give a more detailed visit at the end of the walk round the village.
We will assemble at the St Peter’s Church in the centre of the village for coffee and biscuits, the cost of which is included in the cost of the event.
The walk will mainly be on paved paths, and will just be around the village so well within the capability of most people. It will be mainly outside though and so you are advised to wear clothing appropriate for the prevailing weather conditions.
This event is not designed for children or dogs.
The cost will be £7.50 for members and £9.00 for non-members. This cost includes coffee and biscuits at the beginning and a donation to the Newdigate Local History Society.
Unfortunately the pub at the centre of the village, The Six Bells, is not operational at the moment but for those wanting to have lunch before going back home there are two options: The Surrey Oaks is a few minutes drive away www.thesurreyoaks.com The other is more of a café, also a few minutes drive away but towards Rusper www.tanhousefarmshop.co.uk
Deadline for booking 2 March 2026.
