Walk from Shere to Albury Saxon Church in association with Investec International Music Festival

10th May 2019, 10:00 - 13:30

Join the Chairman and Vice-President of Surrey Hills Society, Gordon Jackson and Chris Howard on this 3.5 mile (5.6 km) circular walk from Shere with a guided tour of Albury Saxon Church and a short musical interlude. This walk is being organised in association with the Investec International Music Festival.

We will start in the delightful, quintessential English village of Shere with its charming buildings and stream with ducks. It leads along the Tillingbourne River and through woodland to the beautiful Albury Park. Here we will have a guided tour of the charming, ancient St Peter and St Paul’s Church dating from Saxon and Norman times. A flint-walled gem, this now redundant church is full of contrasts and surprises including a stunning medieval wall painting of St Christopher sporting a curly red beard, an odd but delightful eighteenth-century shingled cupola over the tower and the magnificent South Chapel – this was remodelled by renowned Victorian architect A.W. Pugin, responsible for the interior of the Palace of Westminster.

The tour will include a short musical interlude, featuring local soprano, Kim Collins, together with tea, coffee and biscuits organised by the friends of the Old Saxon Church. We will then return to Shere through rolling meadows.

We would be delighted to have you joining us for lunch afterwards at The White Horse, a 15th century farmhouse and Grade II Listed Building. One of Hollywood’s most romantic films ‘The Holiday,’ starring Cameron Diaz and Jude Law, was shot there. It is also rumoured to be a former smugglers’ pub after a secret cellar was discovered during extensive renovations.

The cost for members is £10 and £11 for non-members including the guided walk, guided tour of the church, musical interlude, refreshments and a donation to the Church. The walk is recommended to all moderately fit walkers. It is generally flat, although there is one moderately steep descent.  There can be some muddy stretches if there has been a lot of rain. Bring plenty of water. Appropriate footwear and weatherproof clothing is essential. Well behaved dogs on leads are welcome on the walk, as it is bird breeding season. Children under 18 years must be supervised.

Booking is essential. If you would like to join us, please book online at the bottom of this page and indicate in the ‘Comment’ box if you wish to join us for lunch. Alternatively please complete and return the downloadable slip here below before Wednesday 8th May 2019. Full event details will be sent to you closer to the event date.
