Join the Vice President of Surrey Hills Society, Chris Howard on this leisurely summer walk around this fascinating Arts & Crafts gem hidden in the Surrey Hills. This free, 2 mile walk includes a visit to the unique Arts and Crafts Chapel created by Mary Watts, wife of famous Victorian artist, G F Watts. We will also pass by the couple’s beautiful Arts and Crafts home designed by Sir Ernest George, which was completed in 1891. On Saturday 18 July, the Watts’s took possession of the ‘little house’, as they called Limnerslease, which grew into a source of inspiration and a place of great productivity and tranquillity for them both.
We will visit the site where G F Watts’ famous sculpture Physical Energy is due to be positioned this autumn following a huge crowd funding campaign to raise the funds needed to site the sculpture, which will be visible from the A3. See www.wattsgallery.org.uk for more details.
We will also take a look at the outside of the unique Watts Gallery. The first gallery ever designed for a single artist’s work in this country. We will stop at Watts’ tea shop for tea and their delicious locally made fresh cakes.
The walk is fairly flat and leisurely, as it may be quite a hot day. There is plenty of trees on this walk so we will not be out in the sun too much. Walk will go ahead rain, hail or shine.
Come an enjoy a leisurely Sunday stroll around this pretty artists village, well away from the Ride Prudential London Cycle race taking place on this day. Be aware that many roads will be closed due to a major cycling event so if you are coming from the east of Guildford do check your route. The event is free and open to all moderately fit walkers.
Meet us at the Withies Inn, Withies Lane, Compton, GU3 1JA from 10.30am for 11.00 am prompt start and finishing around 12.30pm. We will end the morning with an optional drink or lunch at The Withies Pub Compton.
