9th January 2022, 11:00 - 13:00
Join the President, Chris Howard and Chairman, Gordon Jackson on this 2 hour (3 miles) leisurely walk around the attractive market town on Farnham on the far west of the Surrey Hills.
The walk will also take in historic Farnham Castle ruins. Farnham today is a thriving market town, championing its crafts and creative arts pedigree, with an interesting array of independent shops, cafes and restaurants. It was recently awarded UNESCO World Craft City status – only the third region in Europe to be given this title. Historically, Farnham Castle was the home of the Bishops of Winchester for over 800 years. Farnham became a wealthy market town during Georgian times, although many buildings are much older, often hidden behind Georgian facades.
Many famous authors lived or are closely associated with the town including J.M. Barrie, Jonathon Swift. William Cobbett, Alfred Tennyson, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
The event is free and open to all reasonably fit walkers but is not suitable for buggies or wheelchairs.
The walk is relatively easy, but there is a steep climb up the hill to the castle and quite a few steps within the castle keep. Well behaved dogs are welcome on the walk but some of it is through the town centre by busy roads, so the dogs will always need to be on leads. Children would be welcome but is not designed as a children’s event.
Due to the uncertain situation with Covid there is no planned pub stop for lunch afterwards, but I am sure a few of us will stop for a coffee or lunch. We will decide on the day. There are plenty of pubs and cafes in Farnham to choose from.
The walk should take no longer than 2 hours but it will depend on the size and speed of the group. The walk will be guided at all times. Stout foot wear is recommended and weather appropriate clothing is suggested.
