Come and join the Vice Presidents of Surrey Hills Society, Chris Howard and Ken Bare, on this easy walk around one of the most famous views in Surrey. Newlands Corner is owned by the Duke of Northumberland’s Albury Estate but has an open access agreement with Surrey County Council. The area on the top of the hill is managed by Surrey Wildlife Trust for nature conservation and public enjoyment.
The site is open chalk grassland, containing many rare plants and animals, including an impressive number of ancient yew trees.
The area became famous in 1926 when it became the location for the staged disappearance of celebrity novelist, Agatha Christie. She caused a huge search of the Downs, when it was feared she had been murdered.
The North Downs Way national trail runs through Newlands Corner on its 153 mile (246km) track from Farnham to Canterbury.
Today it is a popular spot for picnickers, cyclists and bikers, but move a short distance away and you enter a magical world of yews tree woods and ancient oaks which few people venture on to discover.
Time of arrival is from 10:30am to leave promptly at 11am. The walk should take no longer than 1 hour but it will depend on the size and speed of the group. The walk will be guided at all times.
