Explore the Greensand Way from Brockham to Reigate (2 walk options)

2nd June 2019, 11:00 - 13:30

Vice-Presidents of Surrey Hills Society, Chris Howard and Ken Bare will be joining one of our walk leaders, Jan Wilkins on this special day of summer walks along the Greensand Way. There are two options for the day.  For our regular short walks program one option is a 2½ hour circular walk along part of the Greensand Way around Brockham. This walk includes two stiles and does NOT include the windmill at Reigate Heath. For the more adventurous among us, there is an option to do an all-day walk of 10 miles (16 km) continuing on along the Greensand Way, all the way to Priory Park in Reigate.

The shorter walk is a 5 mile (8 km) circular walk around Brockham which will start and finish at The Reading Room Cafe, Brockham, Surrey, RH3 7JJ. The longer walk will continue on for lunch at Priory Park in Reigate. We will then return by a different route, stopping to view Reigate Heath Windmill – a Grade II* listed post mill that has been restored and is used as a chapel. It is thought to be the only windmill in the world which is a consecrated church. This walk is fairly flat but there are a few short climbs and it may be a bit muddy if we have had a lot of rain, so do wear appropriate footwear.

The Greensand Way walking route starts in Haslemere, Surrey and ends, 108 miles later, at Hamstreet in Kent near the coast south of Ashford.  In Surrey, it takes the walker along paths which, in many places, give unparalleled views to the south across the Weald as well as northwards to the North Downs.  Much of the land is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB); the stretch from Hindhead to Leith Hill has formed part of the Surrey Hills AONB since 1958, with the tower at Leith Hill being the highest point in the southeast of England. There is a distinctive Greensand Way waymark sign in Surrey, which is a drawing of Leith Hill Tower. The whole route in Surrey is checked and maintained regularly with the invaluable help of volunteers from the Surrey section of The Ramblers. More information about this route together with downloadable maps and directions may be found at www.surreycc.gov.uk/culture-and-leisure/countryside/walking/long-walks/the-greensand-way-long-distance-route.

Our walk is recommended for moderately fit walkers. It is fairly flat, with a few small hills to climb but nothing too challenging. The path is well maintained and fairly easy to travel along. There are 2 stiles on the short walk. Bring plenty of water and a packed lunch for the long walk, or you could purchase something at the Café in Priory Park.

Appropriate footwear and weatherproof clothing are essential. Well behaved dogs are welcome on the walk. Children under 18 years must be supervised.

Meet us at Brockham Green, RH3 7JJ from 10.30am for an 11.00am prompt start and a finish around 1.30pm for short walk and 4.30pm for long walk. There is free parking on the roads around the green. Nearest Railway stations are Dorking Main and Dorking Deepdene. Bus route 32

The event is free and open to all moderately fit walkers but please book your place at the bottom of this page.
