Join our Chairman, Gordon Jackson, and James Herd, a Trustee of the Surrey Hills Society and Director with Surrey Wildlife Trust, for a fascinating guided walk around Wisley and Ockham Commons. James leads landscape-scale conservation projects across Surrey, working with landowners, communities and partner organisations to restore habitats and improve biodiversity across the county.

A particular highlight of the walk will be a visit to the new heathland Green Bridge, constructed as part of the M25 Junction 10 improvement works. This remarkable structure, the first of its kind in the UK to reconnect heathland habitats on this scale, has been designed to enable wildlife, including reptiles, mammals and invertebrates, to move safely between previously fragmented areas of heathland. James will explain the vision behind the project, the engineering challenges involved and its importance for long-term nature recovery.

Wisley and Ockham Commons form part of a nationally important mosaic of heathland, woodland and wetland habitats supporting species such as Nightjars, Woodlarks and Dartford warblers. The walk follows mainly flat sandy paths and is of easy to moderate difficulty. Sturdy footwear is recommended. Along the way there will be opportunities to discuss landscape conservation, habitat restoration and the future of Surrey’s treasured heathlands.

This two-hour walk of approximately three miles will explore one of Surrey’s most important heathland landscapes, managed by Surrey Wildlife Trust. Participants will discover the rich wildlife, history and conservation significance of these internationally important commons.

This walk is unfortunately not suitable for children and pushchairs. Dogs on leads are very welcome. Paths are very sandy so not suitable for wheelchairs.

The cost of the walk includes a donation to Surrey Wildlife Trust:

Members £7.50 and non-members £12.50.
