Sunday 2nd August 2020
10.30am for 11am prompt start – 12.30pm finish
Free walk

Join our Vice Presidents’ Chris Howard and Ken Bare for a 3 mile guided walk around this quintessentially English village, near Guildford, down to the Downs Link – previously a railway line to Shoreham on the south coast which was closed under the Beeching cuts in the 1960s.  We will also be exploring some of the Wey Canal which runs parallel to the route.

Chris has lived in the area for over thirty years, so she knows it well.  A relatively new village, the church only being built in 1864, it nestles around a picturesque cricket green, with an unusual boundary, straddling the main road and pub garden!

Some of the famous residents of the village have included Harry Secombe from ‘The Goons’, Alfred Hitchcock, the film Director, Tony Hart, the children’s TV presenter and artist, and was the childhood home of Richard Branson, founder of Virgin. It was also once home to the illustrator of AA Milne’s ‘Winnie the Pooh’, EH Shepard.

In 2013, BBC 2 featured Shamley Green in the Horizon episode ‘The Secret Life of the Cat’, stating that the village has the highest density feline population in the United Kingdom.

The walk will be a leisurely 3 mile walk on flat ground, with no stiles. It will go ahead regardless of the weather, so bring appropriate raincoats if wet weather is forecast.

Why not bring a picnic to enjoy on the common at the end of the walk if you would like.  Well behaved dogs are welcome.

We will meet at Shamley Green (post code is GU5 0UB).  Parking is free but not easy to find. Park around the green or in front of the Arbuthnot Hall as it is currently not in use.

This event is free but must be booked in advance so we can limit numbers for everyone’s safety.  We will have groups of 5 plus a walk leader to comply with Government guidelines and social distancing measures will be adhered to throughout the walk.  Please don’t bring any additional people with you if they haven’t booked and if you need to cancel, please let us know.  You should not attend the walk if you are feeling unwell or show any COVID-19 symptoms.  You may want to bring your own alcohol-based hand sanitiser, gloves and first aid supplies.  Face masks are optional.

We ask all attendees to follow the prevailing advice on social distancing during this event. If government advice alters prior to the event, we may implement changes or cancellation at short notice.

Booking is essential – please do not just turn up as you will be turned away.  At this time we are taking online or telephone bookings only.  We are currently not able to accept postal bookings.
