Exploring Witley and Milford Commons
Tuesday 18 October 2022
Start 10.30am  finish at 12.45pm

The visit will start with an introduction from the National Trust Ranger and will be followed by a short easy flat level walk (approximately 2 miles) around part of the common.  We will see some of the different landscapes and the work currently being undertaken by the National Trust to maintain the habitats for wildlife. We will also be told about the plans to maintain the common into the future.

A military camp was established at Witley Common in January 1915 to train British and Canadian troops before they were sent to the trenches. It was a large base with its own shops and entertainments. One group of shops, billets and stables straddling the Portsmouth Road became known as ‘Tin Town’. The remains of the buildings can still be seen on the Common.

Witley Common was the base for wartime poet Wilfred Owen, who so vividly caught the horrors of war, but also the triumphs and glory obtained from battle

The sandy soils support rich heathland and woodland, giving great contrasts between views and seductive woodland glades.

We will start with coffee/tea on arrival. There are no other refreshments facilities available, although the National Trust’s Hindhead Common and Devil’s Punchbowl café is only a short drive away.

This event is not suitable for dogs, wheelchairs or pushchairs,  Children over 10 are welcome.

Please note that the paths are flat, but are sandy and participants must be able to undertake a 2 mile walk at a relatively sedate pace.

Please bring clothing suitable for the weather eg. waterproofs, hats, sunscreen, water.

Toilets are available in the Witley Centre.

Cost to Members: £15
Cost to Non-members: £18
