12th April 2026, 10:30 - 13:30

This walk is just within the Eastern boundary of the Surrey Hills National Landscape, exploring the beautiful countryside of Limpsfield Common, Limpsfield Chart and finishing in the historic picture postcard village of Limpsfield itself.
Mostly within woodland and open fields, we explore part of our old friend the Greensand Way and then walk along part of the Vanguard Way, named after the Vanguard Walking Group that set it up in 1981.
Limpsfield Common was owned by King Harold, but when William the Conqueror took ownership, it was given to the ‘Abbey of Battle’. It was later sold to Lord Gresham after the dissolution of the Abbeys, and eventually came to the National Trust in 1972.
The area is rich in sand, which is still quarried today, and because of this, also had brickworks. This also means that it is relatively well drained and easy for walking.

Near the end of the walk, we will take a short diversion to visit St Peter’s Church in Limpsfield village, which hosts the grave of the composer Frederick Delius, alongside other prominent musicians such as Eileen Joyce (pianist), Sir Thomas Beecham (conductor) and Norman del Mar (conductor).
Inside the Church and behind the altar, it still shows signs of the oven used to bake the bread for communion.
There are no toilets or cafes that will be open on a Sunday on our route.
This walk is suitable for those with a reasonable level of fitness but is unsuitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.
