5th July 2026, 10:30 - 12:30

Thursley Common’s boggy heathland is considered to be one of the best examples of acidic bog land in the south east of England and at 350 hectares, one of the largest remaining fragments of heathland. It is a national nature reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest. It provides important habitat for rare woodlarks and Dartford warblers and is also particularly noted for its range of dragonflies and damselflies which are normally prevalent at the beginning of July.
Butterflies also thrive on the common, with elusive species including purple emperors and silver-studded blues. The area is also noted for several varieties of carnivorous plants. Rare breed cattle such as belted Galloway are used to graze this wet ground. The cattle will help reduce encroaching scrub and overly dominating rough grasses such as purple moor grass.
This moderately easy walk is very flat, mostly over boardwalks , with no stiles.
Dogs are welcome on the walk but please note they will need to be on a lead whilst on the boardwalk.
