We are delighted to welcome Military Historian Lorraine Spindler BA who will be giving an illustrated talk discussing research on behalf of the National Trust Military 2025 Project. This will be followed by questions with tea, coffee and biscuits.
Some 330,000 Canadians passed through Aldershot, doing their training before taking up the defence of the UK while most of our British soldiers were away.
From the autumn of 1941 to early 1944 the defence of the UK and particularly the Sussex coast was largely in the hands of the 1st Canadian Army. This was the largest force of British Commonwealth troops ever to be quartered in the UK at one time. Our talk will illustrate their work and influence in Surrey.
Our venue, The Old Barn Hall has much history and seen many changes since the year 1897 when local landowner Arthur Bird wanted to provide a hall for the use of the villagers. Before this the only meeting places were local inns and he felt that ‘the working man had nowhere to go in the evening apart from the public houses.
The Old Barn Hall could tell a multitude of tales but it still provides a wonderful centre for village life. It is now a Grade II listed building of architectural and historic interest.
Great Bookham is a charming village with a good choice of tea shops and of course pubs where you can enjoy refreshment pre or post our presentation.
Also nearby is the National Trust Polesden Lacy house and estate, well worth the visit whilst you are in the vicinity, why not make a day of it.
Cost for members £10
Cost for non-members £12
