Pre-Christmas walk for all the family from Belmont School to Holmbury Hill

Join the President, Chris Howard and Chairman, Gordon Jackson and Committee members of our Society to enjoy our traditional pre-Christmas walk to the summit of Holmbury Hill. This walk has become a tradition of the Society and many of our members tell us it gets them into the festive mood.

This is a slightly more challenging walk as we have a steep hill to climb to get to the summit of the ancient hill fort at Holmbury Hill, but we will do it at a leisurely pace.  However, you are welcome to just join us for our usual mince pies and mulled wine at 12 noon with the Headmistress of Belmont School, Mrs Helen Skrine if you prefer.  At that time Helen will also give us a short talk and tour of the reception areas of Edwin Waterhouse’s family home.

Belmont School is an impressive Arts & Crafts building created for Edwin Waterhouse – one of the founders of the now international consultancy firm, PricewaterhouseCoopers. The architect was George T Redmayne. The builders, Messrs Wall & Hook of Stroud, Gloucestershire, had just completed the building of the magnificent church in Holmbury St Mary in 1878.

Holmbury Hill was the inspiration for Beatles musician, George Harrison to compose “Here Comes the Sun”, when he went for an early morning walk with his friend and local resident, Eric Clapton.

This walk will take about an hour and a half (3.5 mile) and has several strenuous hills so only fully fit walkers should attempt this walk. If you are joining us just for a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie in the reception area at 12 noon, please book the refreshments only option on the booking form.

Well behaved dogs are welcome.

This walk is not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs.

Cost to Members: £5.00 and Non-members: £7.00 which includes mulled wine and a mince pie.
