We are very fortunate to be able to hold our AGM at Gatton Park which is a stunning Capability Brown landscape near Reigate. The Society has a long association with Gatton and so we are delighted to re-visit and support the Gatton Trust.
Gatton Park is best known for the work that was carried out between 1762 and 1766 by English landscape designer Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. Brown swept away the formal landscape that had been there and replaced it with informal naturalistic plantings which accentuated the rolling landscape of the park. A key part of Brown’s design for Gatton was a series of ponds which culminated in the main lake. In recent years the Gatton Trust has carried out a great deal of work to restore Brown’s features so visitors can enjoy them in their full glory today.
Following on from the AGM, Dan Ryan, Park and Gardens Manager at Gatton, will give us a short talk about Capability Brown with particular reference to Gatton Park.
The AGM is of course free to all members with coffee, tea and biscuits being served on arrival.
There will be the option to stay on for a light buffet lunch followed by tea and coffee after the AGM. Please alert us to any special dietary requirements in the comments box when you book.
We are then offered a choice of tour of the site – one for those who perhaps have not visited Gatton before will cover the Old Town Hall, the rock garden and St Andrew’s Church before going down to the Japanese Garden viewing the ponds en route which were so important to Brown’s design.
There will be an opportunity for some people who might find the walk difficult to have a ride there in a small electric vehicle. It is quite a steep incline down to the garden although paved.
For those familiar with some of the features at Gatton, the second tour would make its way to the Japanese Garden and then proceed for a walk right round the main lake. There has been quite a lot of work undertaken on the Japanese Garden in recent times so worth a revisit. The walk round the lake is always enjoyable for the tranquility and the views back up to the house.
The AGM is indoors, but for the tours you will need suitable clothing for the prevailing weather and strong walking shoes.
This event is not suitable for for dogs.
