27th October 2020, 11:30 - 13:00
Tuesday 27 October 2020
Time: 11.30 am – 1pm
The Sheepleas, near the village of East Horsley, extends to 270 acres on the chalk of the North Downs within the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
There is a diverse mix of woodland, scrub and open meadows, the ‘Leas’ from which the site gets its name, where sheep would have once grazed – hence ‘Sheepleas’
One of the original 284 Rothschild Reserves, Sheepleas was once described as ‘the finest piece of botanical and entomological ground within 30 miles of London’. Today it’s home to more than 30 species of butterfly, including the brown argus, grizzled skipper, dingy skipper, silver-washed fritillary and purple emperor, along with a rich variety of fungi and lichens.
This is a repeat of a very popular walk led by Pamela Holt, one of the Surrey Hills Society members. Pamela is a plant identification specialist and will explaining the rich diversity of the area.
Unless Government guidance changes, we will run this event with two small groups. This second group will start the tree walk at 11.30am from the Shere Road Car Park, finishing back at the Shere Road Car Park at 1pm.
The cost of this event is £3 for members and £5 for non-members.
This event not suitable for children and/or pushchairs and is not accessible for members with mobility challenges. Bring water and any refreshments that you may want.
No refreshments or toilet facilities are available at Sheepleas. The nearest refreshments and toilets are at Squires Garden Centre (KT24 6AR) or the Duke of Wellington public house (KT24 6AA), both on the A246
