Discovering Clandon Wood Nature Reserve

9th March 2022, 10:30 - 14:00

Discovering Clandon Wood Nature Reserve
Wednesday 9 March 2022
10.30 am – 2 pm

On arriving at Clandon Wood you would not know it is a cemetery. With thirty-one acres of traditional wildflower meadowland, lakes, wetland and young woodland, Clandon Wood was designed as a nature reserve as well as a burial ground. Core to the thinking behind Clandon Wood is the creation of a place of beauty and openness where those left behind will want to come and spend time to reflect and remember for generations to come. In recent years Clandon Wood has undergone a transformation.

Our tour will start in the elegant contemporary glass pavilion that has been purpose built for the site. We will be welcomed by founder, Simon Ferrar, whose passion for nature has been the driving force behind this very special project. He will give us an illustrated talk for around an hour about the development of Clandon Wood and the huge variety of species that are already being attracted to the nature reserve.

We will then break for tea and coffee and enjoy a walk around the site. The walk will be relaxed along well-maintained paths, but outdoor footwear is advisable and we will be able to see some of the hedge planting that has been organised by the Society and hedge laying that has been done by Surrey Wildlife Trust.

We will be joined by Katy Fielding, who is the Hedgerow Heritage officer for Surrey Wildlife Trust. Katy has a wealth of practical experience and will talk about “Life on the Hedge” as well as some of the initiatives that SWT are promoting to monitor the ecology of our hedgerows within the North Downs area and how members of the Society may be able to help.

We will then have a sandwich lunch in the pavilion before departing at 2:00 pm.

This event is suitable for those with mobility challenges.  It is not really designed for children nor is it appropriate for dogs.
