Sidney Sime Gallery visit

18th October 2020, 14:00 - 16:00

Sidney Simes Gallery, Worplesdon
Sunday 18 October 2020
2pm – 4pm

Join our VP, Chris Howard on this opportunity to visit this fascinating little gallery celebrating early 20th century artist Sidney Sime, who lived and is buried locally in Worplesdon, near Guildford. Sidney Sime is mostly remembered for his fantastic and satirical artwork.

Sime was born in Manchester in 1865, into poverty. After a short career in the mines, he got the opportunity to study at Liverpool School of Art, where he won several awards. He was approached by an author for whom he is most often remembered for, the Irish Lord Dunsany, to illustrate his first book, The Gods of Pegana.

This began an association which lasted for the rest of his life, with his illustrations especially prominent in Dunsany’s early work (until 1922).

He spent most of his adult life in Surrey. His wife Mary Sime donated all the works for this gallery, which is now run by a charity.
