Walk off your Christmas Pudding

27th December 2021, 10:30 - 12:30

MONDAY 27 DECEMBER 2021
10.30am  – 12.30pm finish
Headley Heath, near Leatherhead

Come and join us for our annual walk to blow the cobwebs away after the Christmas festivities.

The walk will take us around the National Trust’s Headley Heath, near Leatherhead, across generally sandy terrain. The walk is 4.5 miles (7.25kms).

Headley Heath is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) for its rich, varied, and sometimes rare, wildlife, made up of a wonderful mosaic of open heath, chalk downland slopes and mixed woodland. Headley was part of the Copthorne Hundred, an administrative division devised by the Saxons.

The Manor of Headley is listed in the Domesday Survey of 1086 as being held by Ralph of Felgeres. It was previously owned by Countess Goda, mother of King Harold, having been granted to her by King Edward the Confessor. In the 18th Century, Headley formed part of the Ashtead Park Estate and later was owned by the High Ashurst Estate. Just after the First World War, it was sold to the Crookenden family of Headley.

As with much of the area along the North Downs, during World War II, the Canadian Army used it is a training ground. In 1946, the Crookendens gave the Lordship of the Manor of Headley to the National Trust.

Dogs are welcome but will need to remain on the lead. There may be cattle undertaking conservation grazing on parts of the Heath. This walk is unsuitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.

Please wear clothing appropriate for the weather conditions (eg hat/warm fleece/waterproofs). Strong footwear as it may be muddy in places.  Bring water and any refreshments that you want

THERE ARE NO TOILETS AVAILABLE

There is sometimes a catering van located at the car park, serving light refreshments, but this cannot be guaranteed. The Cock Inn in Headley village or The Tree in Boxhill village are both close by for those that would like more substantial refreshment afterwards.

N.B.  Parking is free for National Trust members (scan your membership card at the machine to get a ticket), or £4 for those that are not National Trust members (pay by phone).

The event is free but booking is essential. If you wish to join us, please register by using the brown button below and full details will be sent to you nearer the time.
