Come and join us for our annual walk to blow the cobwebs away after the Christmas festivities.
The walk will take us around Banstead Woods and Park Downs. The walk is about 3.5 miles long and include a steady gentle slope at the start and then remains relatively flat.
Banstead Common forms part of the Chipstead Downs Complex, which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The area includes rare Chalk Downland, Ancient Woodland and Clay with Flint. Banstead Woods are mentioned in the Doomsday Book (1086AD) and exhibit Sessile and Pedunculate Oak, Downy Birch, Hazel, Field Maple and Goat Willow. Sweet Chestnut, Ash, Yew and Rhododendron (an invasive species now being removed) are also present. Having been neglected for many years, recent conservation work uses controlled grazing by sheep and goats, which has allowed wild flowers to flourish again.
The area supports much insect life and also Brown Argus, Chalk Hill Blue and Grizzled Skipper butterflies
Dogs are welcome but will need to remain on the lead.
This walk is unsuitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.
