Walk the Greensand Way from Haslemere to Hindhead as part of the Haslemere Walkfest

17th July 2022, 10:30 - 13:15

FREE WALK
Greensand Way from Haslemere to Hindhead
Sunday 17 July 2022
10.30 am – 1.15 pm

We regret the event has been cancelled due to the forecast high temperature.  The walk involves some fairly steep paths and we don’t think it will be pleasant or safe in that sort of heat.

As part of Haslemere’s Walkfest, join the Chairman of Surrey Hills Society, Gordon Jackson on this 6 mile circular walk from Haslemere to Hindhead and back. This walk takes in the beauty of Hindhead Common where we will visit the Inspiring View sculptural bench ‘Xylem’ by Sir Walter Bailey.  Inspiring Views is a Surrey Hills Arts project to create beautiful works of art that also serve as benches.

This is a glorious section of the Greensand Way, with fine views and lots of history passing through woodlands and dramatic heathland. We shall start at Haslemere Museum before climbing steadily upwards to Hindhead – one of the highest points in the south of England.

Discover the use and importance of charcoal and its historical relevance to the Greensand Way whilst enjoying the outstanding and inspirational landscape.

Bring plenty of water and a snack, but we will be stopping for a coffee break at the National Trust Café at Hindhead. Appropriate footwear and weatherproof clothing essential.

Well behaved dogs are welcome on the walk.

Meet us at Haslemere Museum, 78 High Street, Haslemere GU27 2LA at 10.15am for 10.30 am prompt start and an approximate finish around 1.15pm. There are several pay and display car parks available in Haslemere, which are well signposted. If you are travelling by rail, Haslemere Railway station is about a mile from the centre of Haslemere where our walk starts.

The event is open to all reasonably fit walkers and please bear in mind this walk involves one steep ascent.

The cost is free but you must book your ticket by pressing the brown button below.

Deadline for booking 16 July 2022.

Any enquiries please contact us at info@surreyhillssociety.org.
