Discover the village of Ewhurst

16th June 2025, 10:30 - 12:45

Discover the village of  Ewhurst, near Cranleigh

Monday 16 June 2025

10.30am – 12.45pm

The parish of Ewhurst, like many in the southern part of Surrey, is long and thin, stretching some six miles from Pitch Hill in the north to the hamlet of Ellen’s Green on the Sussex border in the south, but is less than two miles from east to west.

It covers an area of approximately 5,400 acres with a population at present of about 2,500. Above the village Pitch Hill stands out from the Greensand escarpment with commanding views over the Weald to the South Downs. Extending northwards is the Hurtwood, a large area of woodland and common land forming part of the Surrey Hills National Landscape.

Much of the parish, however, is on the Weald Clay, which in ancient times was a vast forest and is still one of the most densely wooded areas of Britain.

We are not going to walk this whole area but will concentrate on the small area between the Bulls Head and the church.

We are extremely lucky to have Janet Balchin of the Ewhurst History Society to show us around. She will introduce us to a number of points of historical interest in the village on a relatively short walk in terms of distance around the centre area. This is mainly paved surface.

It will take about 1 ½ hours as we stop a number of times to listen to explanations and view different features. Janet is an expert having written several books about the village so we should learn a lot.

We meet at the The Bulls Head Inn where coffee will be served (cost included). We aim to set off from here around 11.00 am and will return here at the end of the tour at around 12.45.

If you would like to have lunch at the Bulls Head, please indicate in the comments box when booking, and we can book tables ahead so that we can sit together.  Ordering and settling the bill will be down to individuals. You can view the menu here – it is quite interesting offering a range of small plates with some good old pub favourites as well.

Cost to Members: £10
Cost to Non-members: £12.50
This includes tea/coffee at the start of the tour.

This event is suitable for those with mobility issues. Most of the walk will be on paved surfaces and reasonably flat so not challenging.  No dogs please.

Deadline for booking 10 June 2025.
