7th July 2024, 10:30 - 12:30
The walk has good views to the sandstone ridge of hills to the north, with the tower on the summit of Leith Hill standing out. In former times this part of Surrey was much more forested than it is today, being in fact almost one large forest. Over the years clearance of the old woodland has taken place, but much still remains, the native oak being very much in evidence.
We will visit the picturesque church in Oakwood which is dedicated to St John the Baptist.
lt was built about 1220 as a Chapel of Ease to Wotton Church and, although it has been much altered over the years, the original part still remains very much the same. The roof is tiled with the local Horsham slabs.
This walk is classed as Moderate as the walk is a bit challenging. The paths are uneven and some are quite steep, so you will need a good level of fitness .
Please wear suitable clothing for the prevailing weather conditions and and stout walking boots as some of the paths may be slippery. It is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.
Obedient dogs are welcome.
The walk begins and ends opposite the Scarlett Arms, where you can book independently for lunch.
The cost is free but you must book your ticket by pressing the brown button below.
