18th July 2024, 10:00 - 14:00
Join us for this unique visit to the fascinating historic former home of pioneer aviator Sir Tommy Sopwith who’s Sopwith Aviation Company produced thousands of aircraft through WW1 including Sopwith Camels.
The day will include a talk by volunteer archivist at Brooklands Museum, David Hassard, who is also behind the Kingston Aviation Centenary Project. There will also be refreshments on arrival, a buffet lunch and tour of the historic parts of the hotel.
This is a rare opportunity to explore the Grade II* Horsley Towers, now owned by De Vere Hotels. The mansion, which sits at the heart of the estate, was originally built in 1820, designed by Charles Barry, the architect of The Houses of Parliament.
In the late 19th-century, this mansion was bought by Lord Lovelace who further enhanced the property with the bold architectural features that can still be seen throughout, including the stuccoed tower, great hall, chapel and the cloisters.
Horsley Towers was also the marital home of Ada Lovelace the well-known mathematician and writer, before being bought by Sir Thomas Sopwith, of the Sopwith Camel aeroplane fame (among many other things!)
Today, the estate has seen the addition of a contemporary management centre and the renovation of the original stables that, collectively with the mansion house, create an eclectic mix of old and new. Following the talk and lunch we will tour of the gardens plus some parts of the house and spectacular chapel and cloisters.
The talk, lunch and parts of the tour will be accessible to those with mobile challenges but please call Chris Howard to discuss on 07879 841000.
No dogs please.
