6th December 2026, 10:30 - 12:15
In December 1926, Agatha Christie was already one of Britain’s most successful crime writers when she suddenly disappeared from her home in Berkshire. Her car was subsequently found abandoned at Newlands Corner, prompting an extraordinary nationwide search and creating a mystery that has fascinated people ever since.
One hundred years later, join the Surrey Hills Society at Newlands Corner to revisit this remarkable episode in Christie’s life and to enjoy the landscape at the centre of the story.

The event will begin in the Discovery Centre at Newlands Corner, where well-known Guildford journalist and broadcaster Jeff Thomson will give a short talk about Agatha Christie, her life and career, and the extraordinary circumstances surrounding her disappearance. Jeff is a familiar figure in Guildford and an entertaining speaker with a particular knowledge of the town’s literary history.
Following the talk, Gordon Jackson, Chairman of the Surrey Hills Society, will lead a walk of approximately one-hour around Newlands Corner.
Newlands Corner, set high on the North Downs in the heart of the Surrey Hills National Landscape, is one of Surrey’s best-known beauty spots, with extensive woodland, chalk grassland and far-reaching views. The walk will explore this attractive landscape while recalling its unusual connection with one of the most famous episodes in twentieth-century literary history.
The walk will be along well-defined paths, is generally level and is intended to be suitable for a wide range of participants.
