Brockham – The history and community of a quintessential Surrey village

Times: 10.00am – finish 12.30 to 1pm

The green is the important feature of the village with the many buildings of interest in attractive groups around the sides and on the approaches. The range of properties along the north is particularly valuable and offers perhaps the best-known view from across the green with the North Downs as an impressive backcloth.

We are lucky to have Tony Hines, who has written several books on the history of the village, to tell us all about it and take us on a walking tour to point out some of the highlights. He is also chair of the Brockham Bonfire Committee and so knows all about its history and organisation.  The early signs of the building of the huge bonfire for Guy Fawkes should be visible on the Green when we make our visit.

We will meet at the café on the Green called the Reading Room where we will have coffee and an introduction by Tony. Then we will have our tour round the village. This is mainly on paved surfaces with no inclines and will be no longer than 1 ½ hours.

There is a really good pub on the Green called the Grumpy Mole. If enough people indicate a desire to have lunch there, I can organise some tables together but the lunch is not included. If you plan to stay for lunch, please let us know in the comments section when making your booking.
