Chairman’s Day at West Horsley Place

The morning will consist of a guided tour of West Horsley Place. West Horsley Place was inherited by TV Presenter, Bamber Gascoigne (best known as the Quiz Master of University Challenge) from his 99-year-old Aunt, Mary Duchess of Roxburghe.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

It is a Grade I listed mediaeval manor house and estate of great beauty and historic significance. The manor house dates from 1425, though there has been a building on site since Saxon times. The Trust’s recent work to conserve and maintain the house has made the principal rooms safe and comfortable for public access, but the house remains on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register.

We will also have the opportunity to explore the gardens and, weather and time permitting, to look at some of the work that Society Conservation Volunteers have been doing on the estate.

We will then take a short drive for lunch at the nearby Duke of Wellington, which is an ancient country pub distinctively decorated in the style developed by Lord Lovelace during the Victorian era.

 

After lunch we will again drive a short distance to visit St Mary’s Church, which is of Saxon origin with the nave and tower constructed in 1120.

 

With a roundel and medallion of “pot metal ” glass using an early method of producing stained glass in 1210, historic wall paintings and being reputedly the last resting place of Sir Walter Raleigh’s embalmed head, this is an interesting church to explore. We will have a short introductory talk from local parishioner and Society member, Pam Holt.

Cost to members £50.00 and £60.00 for non members.

This price includes a two course lunch and £20pp entrance fee to West Horsley Place.

Coffees and light refreshments can be obtained from the West Horsley Place Concession if you would like one before our tour.  This will be at your own cost and you will have to allow time to order and finish this before the start of our tour.

Deadline for booking is 7 May 2023 to allow for pre-ordered food requests to be given to the Head Chef at West Horsley Place.
