Chairman’s guided tour of Guildford

17th April 2019, 10:00 - 13:00

Join our Chairman, Gordon Jackson for this fascinating guided visit of Guildford. The morning will start at Guildford House Gallery where we will be welcomed by our Tour Guide and the knowledgeable Tourist Information Centre staff. We will get a private, guided tour of this historical building in the heart of the town centre.

Tea/coffee and biscuits will be served at the Gallery Café before our guided tour in the town centre. This intriguing walk will take us around town for an hour and a half and follow the footsteps of many illustrious people who have forged the cultural history of the town.

Along the way we will discover some of the Actors, Authors, and Artists intimately associated with Guildford. So be prepared for tales of scandal, fame, intrigue and several surprises. Lewis Carroll rented a house in Castle Hill for his sisters and was a frequent visitor to the town, sometimes preaching at St. Mary’s Church. P G Wodehouse, George Bernard Shaw and Alan Bennett are some of the other names you will hear about. Why did P G Wodehouse – creator of Jeeves and Wooster – interest MI5? As memories fade who was Yvonne Arnaud?

The 90 minute town walk is mainly downhill and will conclude at the Yvonne Arnaud theatre. It will include uneven ground and is therefore unsuitable for those with mobility problems.

The price for the visit is £10 for members and £12 for non-members including refreshments and a donation to our volunteer Town Guides for their services which they do pass on to a charity. This year they have chosen Oakleaf Enterprises https://www.oakleaf-enterprise.org as their main charity, but they may also donate smaller amounts to other charities when they review the finances at the end of 2019.

Booking is essential.
