The ‘Gentle’ Game of Croquet – CANCELLED due to weather conditions

9th August 2018, 14:00 - 17:00

Polesden Lacey is a beautiful 1,400 acre estate, high on the North Downs, with stunning views across the Surrey Hills. On a clear day it is possible to see Leith Hill and the South Downs in one direction and the sprawl of London in the other. Polesden Lacey was owned by society hostess Margaret Greville, who entertained royalty, politicians and the cream of society. Following her death in 1942, the property was left to the National Trust.

We will be taking over the croquet courts, which sit on the lawns to the South West of the mansion, with stunning views across the valley to Ranmore Common. We have booked all four courts, which means that waiting times for a game will be minimal, but will give you a chance to chat with your fellow members and enjoy the views and gardens. Mallets and balls will be provided. At 4.15pm, join us in the Granary Café for tea and cakes (not included in price). We will be finishing by 5pm.

Polesden Lacey has a cafe serving cooked lunches, sandwiches and snacks and also a coffee shop offering hot drinks, sandwiches and cakes. If you wish to arrive earlier you could explore the grounds or the house on your own, before getting lunch and joining us at 1.45pm. The cafe, coffee shop, main toilets and gift shop are located before you pass the pay desk into the grounds. However you are free to leave and return to the grounds as frequently as you wish, in order use the facilities.

Meet at 1.45pm in the Dairy Courtyard, which is the first quadrangle that you enter (past the toilets and Cowshed coffee shop but before passing the gift shop into the second courtyard). If you are a National Trust member you will need to show your membership card on entry to the property. Non-members will need to enter with us as a group, in order that we pay the discounted Group rate. We will need to collect the mallets and balls from visitor reception and carry them down to the courts.

The event is not suitable for young children or dogs. Although not a long walk, those with mobility difficulties may find the terrain challenging, but wheelchairs that can cope with grass, rough paths and shallow slopes are suitable. Suitable wheelchairs can be booked in advance by contacting Polesden Lacey direct (Tel: 01372 452048). Suitable footwear and clothing for the weather should be worn, including sunscreen and sunhat if necessary. Bring water/drinks if hot.

Parking is free to NT members displaying the 2018 National Trust parking sticker, or by getting a ticket from the parking machine by scanning your membership card. For non-National Trust members, car parking is pay and display costing £5.00.

The cost for the visit, will be £8 for members and £10 for non-members. Those joining us in the granary Café afterwards, will need to purchase their own tea and cakes.

Booking is essential. This event is limited to 32 people and if you would like to join us, please book your spaces online at the bottom of the page or alternatively complete and return the downloadable form here below to arrive at Warren Farm Barns before Tuesday 2nd August 2018.
