Explore Ewhurst – free, guided walk

3rd March 2019, 11:00 - 13:30

Join the Vice President of Surrey Hills Society Chris Howard, on this 4 ½ mile (7km) circular walk from Ewhurst village green. This walk is fairly flat but may be a bit muddy if we have had a lot of rain, so do wear appropriate boots.

This is a pretty corner of the Surrey Hills and a little off the beaten track. The name Ewhurst in old English is derived from “Iw” meaning Yew tree and “hyrst” meaning wooded hill. The area around Ewhurst used to be known as a centre for glass working. The industry centred around Chiddingfold and Wisborough Green and two sites at Ewhurst. The names of Huguenot families known to be involved in glassmaking are found in the Ewhurst Parish lists for the Surrey Musters of 1583/4.

Join us afterwards at The Bulls Head Pub, which was built in 1908, and originally called the Bulls Head Hotel. It was built speculatively, as a railway hotel, in anticipation of the railway coming through Ewhurst (which never happened!).

The walk is recommended for moderately fit walkers. It is fairly flat, but there are some stiles. Bring plenty of water and a snack. Appropriate footwear and weatherproof clothing essential. Well behaved dogs are welcome on the walk. Children under 18 years must be supervised.

Meet us at the Exhurst village green, GU6 7PB from 10.30am for 11.00 am prompt start and an approx. finish around 1.30pm. There is free parking on the roads around the area and also at the church of St Peter & St Paul car park on the hill. Nearest Railway station is Guildford – 7 miles away.  Then Arriva bus route 53, 63, 63X to Ewhurst.

The event is free and open to all moderately fit walkers, but please book your place at the bottom of the page.
