Explore Puttenham

2nd September 2018, 11:00 - 13:00

Join the Chairman of Surrey Hills Society, Chris Howard on this gentle 1.5 hour walk around an area of the North Downs famous for growing hops, which is used to flavour beer.

Puttenham Common is 263 hectares and managed under an access agreement by Surrey County Council and Surrey Wildlife Trust. The area contains now scarce lowland heath and part of the site is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Puttenham is noted in the Domesday Book of 1086 and was called Reddesolham or Rodsall. In 1223 the manor of Puttenham was divided between two sisters, one of whom gave her half of the manor to the Augustinian Priory of Newark, near Ripley. Puttenham Priory is a Palladian mansion significantly rebuilt in 1761 by Thomas Parker. The house is Grade II listed and is currently the home of Queen drummer, Roger Taylor.

The village features in Brave New World, a dystopian novel by local author, Aldous Huxley. This area has some of the last remaining hop gardens in Surrey. Oast houses were built here in the 19th century to dry the hops before they were transported to breweries in Guilford and London. The last oast houses were in use until the early 1970s, after which they were converted into houses.

This 3-mile walk is free and open to all reasonably fit walkers. Meet us at Puttenham Common Car Park, off Suffield Lane, GU3 1BE (Grid Ref: SU910453) at 10.30am for an 11.00 am prompt start and finishing before 1.00pm. There will be an optional drink in a local pub afterwards. Dogs are welcome.
